Posted on Wed, Nov. 24, 2004

This MORON actually went to work 2 days later.

Police: Suspect made case easy

The accused reportedly robbed the McDonald’s restaurant where he worked, and the store manager recognized him.

By Dan Cortez

dcortez@news-sentinel.com

It was his voice that gave him away.

It was the morning of Nov. 14. Fort Wayne Police said Kevin Govan was in the middle of robbing the McDonald’s restaurant at 6810 Bluffton Road. Govan is accused of ordering the store manager, Andrea Howe, to lock employees in a freezer and give him money from the safe. Howe was befuddled. She recognized the voice.

“Kevin, what are you doing?” she asked, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Fort Wayne Police probably were wondering the same when they picked up Govan two days later for an interview about the robbery. He was at work as maintenance man — at the McDonald’s at 6810 Bluffton Road.

Govan, as it turns out, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for missing a court date and was later charged with armed robbery and criminal confinement in connection with the robbery earlier this month.

Govan, of the 1100 block of Hamilton Avenue, is in City-County Lockup on a $20,000 bond.

Detective Jim Seay has worked narcotics and has spent several years in the detective bureau. He said he’s never heard of someone pulling something as odd as robbing his workplace before.

“Several people got a look at him. It wasn’t a tough case,” Seay said.

Seay said it was unclear how long Govan had worked at McDonald’s before the incident. What led Govan to allegedly rob his own place of employment remains a mystery.

“I don’t know what his motive would be other than that he was making $8 an hour and he wanted more money,” Seay said.

The description of the incident, as filed in Allen Superior Court on Nov. 17, makes the case look like a no-brainer.

Govan is charged with entering the restaurant about 5 a.m. on a Sunday armed with a handgun. He allegedly forced employees into a cooler and ordered Howe to lock the door. It was unclear how Govan may have attempted to conceal his identity.

At this point, Howe and two employees recognized Govan’s voice and eyes. Later, Govan ordered Howe to give him money from the safe. That is when she recognized Govan’s voice.

When the employees unlocked the cooler, they saw Govan standing outside the restaurant. When he fled the restaurant, a police chase ensued. Govan got away, but police said he ditched his jacket and two bags of cash in the 2000 block of Woodhaven Drive.

“The amount of money matched the deposit slips from McDonald’s,” Seay said.

Two days later, Govan was at the restaurant when police picked him up on an outstanding warrant for possession of marijuana. He was taken to the detective bureau, interviewed and later charged.

♦On Dec. 5, 2000, Govan was arrested after police said he robbed a man outside an Arby’s restaurant. Police said Govan was armed with a handgun and looking for money, but the man he robbed only had a couple of bags containing medical supplies and medicine. Govan was later convicted and spent almost two years in prison.

Police recognized Govan’s name when they opened the case. “I don’t know what he was thinking,” Seay said. “It took two days (to solve) and the only reason it took that long was I couldn’t get ahold of the store manager.”
