Ancient 3.5hp 2 stroke how to start!

I needed it yesterday bugger wouldnt fire, but i think its my total lack of technique rather than the engine at fault, for a start i havent a clue what does what
Fuel tap open, cap breather cracked, full throttle on the slide, pull and pull no go, gave up and fixed my main engine instead
It was serviced new plug and fuel approx 2 months ago.
Any advice appreciated as i really need it to be reliable.

How ancient is ancient? All ancient engines are not the same. Does the engine have a choke knob or primer? Did you use it? Most engines with a slide type of throttle should not be started on full throttle. There is normally a start position. Pictures of the engine and its controls would help.

Amazing what you can see when you arent panicking, ive just noticed the choke and the gearlever/clutch set up
So guessing out of gear, fuel on, tank cap cracked, choke on (which way is on?) just not sure how much throttle, position 2?

Well its running but smokey but runs and revs fine, quite pleased also soaked to the skin!
To stop it i switched the fuel off and let it die so the carb is empty?
It does stop if you push the throttle to its stop position, i just didnt like the idea of the carb full of fuel.

Very leary to comment on this but older envenrudes had a push botton stop on them. I have heard complaints by using this on older mercs with stators it shorts the stators out. Your engine probably had points. I would suggest using the choke to kill the engine when times comes to shut her down. You may want to look and see if there is a ground wire broken or unhooked from the tiller that would kill the engine in the stop position. If the ground is not hooked up it won,t work.
