I wanted to know if my 12.5lb mushroom anchor is good to hold my 1200lb 16ft boat. Also, I wanted to know if I should buy a bigger or different size anchor. I'm looking for something that will hold me nice and steady when im in the bay and will allow me to throw it in the sand to hold her steady when i beach it. Im a new boater and any help would be great

Mushroom anchors are lousy for everyday anchoring. They are real useful for moorings, because they work their way way down into the bottom, after a while, and consequently have great holding power.

If you are anchoring in sand, silt, mud or some other soft bottom, a fluke-style anchor is best. For that boat a 8# fluke anchor with 3/8: twisted nylon is a good combo. Chain is optional.

i would not trust a mushroom anchor to hold in any kind of wind or current. plus mushroom anchors are heavy, and saving weight in a small boat is always nice.

danforth style anchors hold great and with a little bit of chain they will bite in quick. if you have a local west marine or something, im sure they can get you set up. it shouldnt cost much for your little boat.

If most of your anchoring is in sand--I definately would go with the proper size Danforth. A genuine Danforth and not a knock off. Good luck

If all you need is a lunch hook or you move from spot to spot often, then a mushroom is fine. If you really want to anchor, get a danforth with at least 6 feet of chain.
