Okay guys, I have a 1990 Johnson 140 VRO. I have a 17' ChrisCraft fiberglass. My question is what size fuel tank would you guys carry for a day of fishing. I have a 12 gal but I am guessing that will not last long with this size motor.

I don't rely on a single tank. If you don't keep an eye on the level and run out, then you'll need a tow. With two tanks, you can run on one until you run dry and still have enough gas to get back.

Agreed. Either a sufficient tank (before long you'll know by experience how log (or short!) an amount lasts) or two tanks (separate connections so you know when #1 is empty). Remember that when in choppy seas you won't be able to suck the last from the tank as it constantly moves away from the tube. Means that even though the gauge says you have some fuel whille sitting i the calm cove, it may turn out different when heading home over the chops.

Good practise is to always fill her up before going out. Think about using a storage-additive when season is ending, to keep fuel fresh for next season. BTW: A full tank builds less condensate (water).

Many who have carried a small spare can (automotive) have had to realize the it's way too little.

I would get another 12 gal to have on board, as long as you have room for it.

Then you should have plenty unless you're driving a LONG way from the boat ramp!
