I purchased a 1978 American 16, I can't seem to find any info on this boat or another one like it. Has anyone seen anything. I've seen 15s and 18's but nether is a bowrider like mine. Is this just a rare boat, posibly canada only?
Hi Snipes,
You might want to check out the brochures I have posted at the Yahoo Starcraft group at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/starcraft_boats/
They both show the 16 Open Bow.
There was also one on eBay last week:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...1,1&item=180000009356&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT
It closed without a single bid! If it had been a tad closer I might have jumped on it, but I really don't need another project at the moment.
All of the Americans use basically the same V-hull design and ride quite nicely for small boats, even in a moderate chop or heavy traffic. They do have their weaknesses, though, with the major one being they are prone to having the foam get water saturated, which will then take the stringers, floor and transom out. Be sure to check your hull for solidity and moisture. The foam is under the floor on either side of the central tunnel, between the stringers and the chines. All three of my Americans had saturated foam and rot issues.
As for rarity, I have seen more of the closed bow 15s and 16s than I have open bow 16s. They do look sharp, though...
Enjoy!
- Scott
