Which would be the preferred chip in a Dell Laptop. A Sempron 1.8.ghz or Turion 64 x 2 1.6 ghz? I'm seeing Dell 1501's with one or the other of these. At first glance the 1.8 would seem to be the choice but from what I could find maybe the slower one can do more things better at one time.

As far as the OS, which I asked about earlier, would it be safe to say that Vista would like a lot more RAM than XP? Seems that Gates has always operated on the somewhat questionable premise that the more memory his programs require, the better.

edit: I just saw responses to this OS/RAM issue in my XP vs Vista thread.-thanks

I'd go with the Turion 64 x 2 1.6 ghz. The 2 means duel core, that's like 2 processors is one.

Get the Sempy, it's a budget chip but will work in every app just as fast, spend the money on more ram if you can get more. Currently there is no software that can take advantge of dual cores proc's any hoo and if your getting vista for her she will give you a big hug for 2 gig's if you can get it...;)

I disagree and agree. Duel core is like hyper threading and will help with performance. Software is not built around HT, but Windows is. It fools the OS, not the programs, to thinking you have more than 1 processor.

But more RAM will help as well. MS recommends at least 512mb of ram for Vista, that really means 2x or 4x if you can afford it.

I'd also stay away from Vista until at least SP1 comes out.

The Sempron is a very capable processor. That's what's in my laptop. As long as you have enough ram I doubt she'll be disappointed with it. But keep in mind it is a budget processor (like Intel's Celeron). If the Turion won't break ya I'd say go for it. Like Plainsman said it's like two cpus in one (same as Intel core duo) so it's a lot more powerful. I think if it were me and I were getting Vista I'd probably get the Turion and 1 gig of ram (for starters), but I tend to over do things when I don't know how much is enough. Case in point, the floor joists in my dog kennel are PT 2x10s lol. :D

Oh yea, if you're getting the Dell, opt for the bigger battery. She'll appreciate that. An extra power adaptor is also nice so you can leave it at a permanent location at home and also have one in the laptop bag.

See ya next time when you're ready to hook up that wireless router... :)

The diff between 1.6 and 1.8Mhz is pretty much nil unless you're a gamer or like going moc10 with your hair on fire. Which one is cheeper? You would be hard pressed to show any performance differences between them.
