Good forum to all, I'm a new member in the maritime sector, I have a 90 model 2-stroke suzuki engine, we cruised for the first time yesterday, etc. Everything is fine, thank god we couldn't go out today due to the ban, so I went down to the harbor next to the boat, the engine was not in the water, it was lying flat I wondered if it would work on one rope? I pulled it out and it worked immediately, my uncle called out "You can burn my circuit, don't start it" (I think he mentioned the impeller) so I stopped right away and I was worried because I'm new, The engine ran for 10 seconds maximum (maybe four seconds), then I stopped it immediately, did it cause any damage? I would be glad if you help.
sorry for my english

there is a good chance it did hurt the rubber impeller running dry like that.
only way to know is take it apart and inspect it
the water lubricates and cools the rubber while it turns against the metal cup and wear plate,
being dry it could have tore parts if the impellor off or melted it some from the friction

Thank u for answer
Do you think a serious problem can occur without running dry for 5 seconds?

yes , it can.
need to inspect to be sure
if there was some water left inside the pump from the last time it was pumping water then it could be just fine.
also depends on how old the impeller is, old and stiff/brittle rubber will fall apart quicker

Float the boat, start the motor and check if peeing strong, 5-10 secs max it's not a big deal. My boating club which runs a Suzy 40 HP tests the motor dry as stated, nothing has happened to the impeller last time it was checked....

From 4 to 10 seconds running dry is probably not going to overheat/damage the impeller or melt the pump body, but as mentioned it won’t hurt a thing to drop the lower unit to inspect….and while you’re at it, go ahead and install a new impeller….for about $30, it’s nice to know you’re good to go!….
