I'm trying to get this motor to run for a older buddy, who bought a new evinrude 25hp. It's been in the shop more than the water.
1971 evinrude 9.5 hp. I'm still wait ing on the manual. I've rebuilt the carb, ck. Comp. And was attempting to set points. Some one's work on this motor before. There are 2 wires running beside the hi tension leads up through the back side of the stater plate. (Not coil wires) they have new connection on them, however they aren't attached to anything, the stater has grommets for these wires to feed through but I don't no what they are or where to attach them, any idea's? I'm not going to check for spark until I can figure this out, there will be more questions coming. Thanks for any help. One of the connects to a obviously factory plg in but was also disconnected.

Sounds like kill switch wires. Maybe the prior mech replaced due to damage?

Also does anyone know where to download free manuals? For evinrude, I have 3 more already waiting for repair, I need the exploded views, and schematics on multiple types of small outboards, those manuals are expensive! I used to repair motorcycles 2 and 4 stroke, but have bored with them and wanted to try something different, and less dangerous, 1 of my buddies wrecked a lg. 4 cylinder Suzuki I rose from the dead. Fishing safer, I don't want to be responsible for the people I'm fixing things for, and something bad happens ya know?
Any help here very much appreciated.

FIrt of all Guy Tribble, :welcome: to iboats. Nice o have you aboard...

Have you removed the flywheel? If so then you can see where those two wires go to or come from (which ever the case). But I have to agree with interalian as they sound like wires that short out the primary side of the spark coils to kill the ignition and stop the engine. With the flywheel removed, you can see them. As for manuals, I have no ideas if there are downloadable versions available. You can certainly buy factory and engine specific manuals and there are the absolute best for each engine model. Not the aftermarket versions but the factory ones. Others may know about online versions. :noidea: However, you can go to boats dot net and see your engine break downs and parts list. That may help seeing how they disassembly anyways. :thumb:

No Title

The wires go to the stop button (shorting switch) on the front panel.

Thank you very much I see now, this switch appears to be nderneath where the pull start handle is located, it looks like it is sitting a little deeper in the well than it should, I don't see the switch or any wires coming off off it. It has to be used for the motor to run correct? I was told this motor was running before, I find that difficult to believe, at this point. The top spacer for the flywheel nut is also missing, and the throttle would not move because the fly wheel was torque correctly to far down on the mag plate... (stater) does my hypothesis sound correct to you?
Thanks again for your response and help.

The stop switch can be disconnected and the motor will run provided the wires are isolated. To kill it, pull the choke.

Thank you very much that switch is 83. Bucks, I hate to do this but the budget is my own as I'm going to surprise an old buddy who taught me to bass fish, I mean really bass fish! Thanks again so much, I thought that was a kill switch.
