Hello All,

I have an 87 SeaRay Seville 190BR with the beloved 3.7l Mercruiser.

Last Summer I was at the lake when the Camshaft distributor drive gear and the distributor gear got pissed off at each other and got into a fight, well the dist. lost but the cam has some bruises.

I am a mopar freak and was wondering what would i need to adapt a chrysler 273 small block to the Alpha one outdrive,

Yes I know I am off my rocker, But I like doing things different.

I would be looking at going with thru hull exhuast. I love the sound of the water muffeled exhuast untel you get on it and the exhuast opens up. mmmmmmm just thinking about that sound makes me giggle like a school girl.

Oh well

How would I mount the 273 to the outdrive???

Thank You
Brian

Doing what your thinking will be a majior pain. you will need to build many parts.

If you really like your hull i would look around for a rundown hull with a good engine and drive and change the entire setup. Remeber almost nothing you have will work with a different engine.

Ayuh,... At a minimum you need a flywheel cover/ rear motor mounts, that fit the motor, which Doesn't exist..

Marine distributor, marine starter for beginners. Can you get water cooled exhaust manifolds?

My first though was, "why stop at a 273?"
As long as you're thinking of going to the trouble of converting to Mopar, why not go with an '05-up 5.7 hemi? There's lots of them in the wrecking yards by now. And they sound soooo cool at speed.

Switch to a different boat. I recall seeing ads for inboard ski boats with a 318 Chrysler engine. Would be much easier.

Volvo Penta used Mopar small blocks in front of the 270 and 280 drives during the 60s and 70s.Find an old clunker for a donar and switch the whole works.

I would just pull the whole mess, install a new transom, and put a Scott Atwater on the back!!

You guys are totally clueless about Chrysler Marine. I have no issues getting parts for the four Chrysler powered boats in the family. From the oldest 1946 Chrysler Crown to the 1963 426 wedge and the two 440's.

Chrysler built some very cool stuff. Like the 426 in my B.I.L.s 1963 Coronado. Solid lifters dual quads.

And yet you still feel it necessary to share your ignorance?

Well, lets go on back to the original question shall we?

If my "ignorance" includes KNOWING that you cannot bolt an already obsolete Chrysler engine to a Mercruiser gimbal and drive. it appears that I am not sharing ignorance after all........

Ayuh,... That still don't change the Fact that Mercruiser Never used a Chrysler motor, 'n the parts you need to do what you want Don't Exist...

I've got a houseboat with twin 318s, 'n Dana drives... Not Mercruisers...

Re: Am I off my rocker???? Chrysler repower?

This topic is dead from november, but basically what you'd have to do is get an adapter plate to convert a mopar v8 to a gm transmission. Then you could in theory bolt up a gm/mercruiser flywheel/bellhousing and drive coupler. Mopar water manifolds are still available, expect to pay 500-600 for a set. Then you'd have to fab your own motor mounts and pipe together your own cooling system. The sad reality is for the $$$ you'd have to invest into the adapter parts, you could build a nicely done chevy 350. I'm a mopar guy too, but some things just aren't worth it.

Mercruiser did use Chrysler Motors in part of the 80's. I have a Chrysler 360 Mercruiser coming down to me for use in my boat. Now were they as common as the GM motors no but they were used. IN the hieght of the 60's and 70's Chrysler motors both inboard and outboard had the highest market share of any motor manufacturer. Chrysler was building Marine motors before Gm was even thinking about it. Its true Chrysler Marine parts are a littl e more expensive and getting harder to find but they are still out there. I dont agree with putting in a 273 since its the smallest small block Chrysler that can be had maybe its for fuel savings. in the Chrysler world any small block parts are interchangeable from the 273 to the 318 to the 340 the 360 somewhat but since its externally balanced there are a few things not interchangeable. To that fact the 5.2L and 5.9L magnums which are 318 and 360 motors will also bolt in although they were never used for marine purposes a good stock truck/rv cam will work good in a marine use.

I am planning on upgrading my motor sometime in the near future to a 360 Magnum because it has the roller rockers and lifters I beleive it will make it more economical than the old school 360 with flat tappet lifters and rockers.

Hmmm,.... Nope,... No they Didn't....

You might have a Chrysler motored Merc coming, but it Didn't come from Mercruiser with a Chrysler motor...
Especially from the 80s...

Mercruiser dropped the Ford motors in the late 70s, 'n has been pure Chevy power ever since,...
With the exception of the Merc 470 of course...
