i have my boat for sale, I know its the nearing the end of the season, but I am not getting any hits. I have had it for sale since august.

Here is what its is
87 Glassport 165 with a merc 3.0 140
Done this year...
new impeller
New bellows
New gimbal
New trim sensors
new lower shift cable
rebuilt carb
new prop
new bimini

It was repainted and had a new interior 3 years ago
here is a pic

I have it on CL and have a ton of pics and a ton more info on it, I have it with everything needed to get on the water and its listed for $4800obo.

I thought the price seemed fair given the condition, but I am starting to think not. Any thoughts? I don't want to give it away and I spent over 2500 on parts and service this year already.

Re: Am I asking too much?

Very sharp looking boat and it looks super clean.
The bad thing about it is you never get the money back for restoration work..

If it were mine i would not take less than 4k for it in that condition.Maybe best to wait for Spring and list it.

+1

It's just the wrong time of year. Hold it till next spring, and your phone will likely ring off the hook. Heck, I'm already thinking about winterizing (sorry to use such foul language).

Thats where I am at, I need at least 4k. I hate to wait until spring for 2 reasons..
I will have to do winterization/summerization again which will be a few hundred and I was also hoping to get one of the bargains at the boat show in Feb.

I think this time of year the shoppers are looking for fixer-upper bargains to fix up over the winter. Wait till Spring. I wouldn't want to take less than $4k for that boat which is in exceptional condition.

Looks sharp but IMO it's a lot of money. Out of curiosity any idea on the price when new? My simple mind say for not much more $ a person could buy something 10 years newer with contemporary engine and drive in as fantastic of shape. Throw up a couple of interior shots. I'd love to have that if I was a collector.

Re: Am I asking too much?

While I have had this for sale I have been keeping my eye on CL, and sure there are many early to mid 90's boats for sale for 5k+ they have not had any recent major maintenance. So while they are newer mine is in equally decent shape (or better) as far as appearance goes, but mine is also mechanically perfect. While I kind of agree, the 5 year newer boat for 500 more may other costly reconditioning (floors, gimbal, ect.)

Wow,that is just fantastic. I have an 84 Bayliner that is in that nice of shape interior wise not exterior wise but is original (we bought it new) so I can appreciate a nice older boat. This is a bit of a stretch I realize but in my mind the difference between 4500 and say 10,000 is minimal. To further stretch that thread, an identical boat to my 2003 Chaparral that I paid almost 20k for at the peak of the market nearly new (40+ hours) three years ago sold recently in town for 11,000 with less hours in literally perfect original shape. Original, mature owner maintained to a T. It is like an uber luxury car on the water when comparing the small boat segment but nobody was buying for what you'd assume it was worth. I see a 4500$ price tag and think to myself if 11k buys a nearly new ultra luxury Chap in this depressed used market what would say 7k or 8k buy and how much newer can I get.

Exceptional condition! No way i would take less for it!

An older boat that has been that well cared for is worth much more than a newer abused boat.
If a few buyers would see that in person it would be sold!

I sold my 1987 StarCraft for 4500 bucks. It was not in that good of condition but had new interior. It also had OMC Cobra power...
It ran great and had been well cared for but i felt 4500 was fair and was happy to get it.

Damn That thing is like showroom condition. Very nice. One thing that might hurt you is that it s kinda small and its a smaller group of shoppers can appreciate a near mint older boat. Its just a smaller market. IMO For that money one could prob get a bit newer, bigger, w a bigger engine in good shape. Though not mint like yours. Sure it pretty though... Nice job on restore/ upkeep !

Thanks, I do love it, size is the problem we are running into though. We have our 2nd on the way and we usually go out with friends/family and this only holds 6.

Re: Am I asking too much?

To follow up to my last post, I do believe condition is everything and is really the x factor here and what can prove my simple minded logic above wrong. I put my 1997 car up for sale last summer for an egregiously high price. Literally you could have bought a mid 2000's for the money. I was adamant that it was worth it because it was in as nice of condition as your boat and I worked to make sure it always stayed in that condition over all the years I owned it. Family and friends laughed at me because the price was crazy. It sold the same day as the posting on CL for full price with no negotiation to a guy 4 hours away as fast as he could get to my house. Condition was the reason given for his purchase of the car versus the mid 2000's he was also looking at. I catch a lot of heck for being as picky as I am about my property but have yet to not have it pay off. I hope the condition and the care you obviously took to restore your boat pays off. Do the engine and bildge look as nice as the rest of the boat?

What a sweet boat. I'd ask 6k for it. Someone will come along and buy it.

I don't know. With the economy the way it is it's a tough market. I wanted a boat this spring to pull the kids tubing and skiing. I found my 21' Century loaded with deluxe upholstery, nice 5.7 and all the bells and whistles in beautiful shape for $4500. Maintained by the same marina since new.

Saw a lot of 26-30' Sea Rays below $10k. Too big for my lake.

Re: Am I asking too much?

I would ask $3975.00 Firm

Take a picture of it in good light in front of a lake or something nice.
No parts etc. in the back ground.
Remove the list of work that was done because it will concern some people that that might be required often.
Preventive maintance is current plus a new top.
It will be a first time buyer so offer to show them the lauching and operation if they buy the beer. Make it fun. ;)

WOW! I don't think that would last a day at that price in the Dallas market. I showed my wife and she said sell your heap and offer him 4k...lol.
That is one pretty boat and I am sorry you are having a hard time selling it, people don't know what they are passing on.

Re: Am I asking too much?

Do you want to sell the boat, or, are you trying to recoup money as if it is an investment? If you want to sell the boat, and you aren't getting any bites at that price, then you are asking too much. If you are wanting to sit around and wait however long it takes to sell it and get a specific price, then you aren't... but you may never sell it.

It could also be that you aren't doing a good job with your ad for the sale. I bought two boats used on Craiglist this year and have looked at a lot of boat ads. Some of them are terrible, or they don't really make the buyer want to buy it. For example, when I see a listing where they've listed out all the parts that they've replaced like you did in this posting, I just move on because I am thinking about all the problems the boat had. It may not be technically correct, but its just part of the buying experience. Rather than focus on all the stuff that you've replaced, I would just talk about how great the boat is and that its in excellent condition. Maybe say something about all systems serviced or something.

This is just my opinion, and others may not agree. I will say that I sold my boat on Craiglist in 1 day for more than I paid for it earlier this year by focussing on the good aspects of the boat and how we used it, and getting some really good pictures of the boat in the listing.
