I have a 15hp 2-stroke evinrude, I would like to buy an alweld aluminum boat ($$, welded, not riveted). I don't know what size boat would be ideal for that motor. I'd like a 14' but I'm not sure how width will affect speed, I have two small boys, so I want this thing stable. Based on what Alweld specs for flat bottom jons: a 14' with a 44 " width weighs 255 lbs and is rated for a 25hp, a 14' 48" weighs 330lbs. The other option is alwelds modified vees: a 14' with a 44" width weighs 240 rated for a 25hp, a 14' 48" weighs 310 is rated for a 40hp. I want a stable, all welded aluminum boat (14' preferably) what would best suit my 15hp two stroke? jon boat flat bottom or modified vee?

Also, what is the difference in quality between weld craft and alweld?

Since you're placing a premium on stability (and rightly so) I'd go with the 1448 mod vee. You won't fly with the fifteen but should be able to plane, and the mod vee hull won't slap the water as much as the flat. Can't speak to the difference(s) between Weldcraft and Alweld. Alweld is popular around here as are Xpress, SeaArk and War Eagle. The truth is pretty much any john boat whether it's welded or riveted will hold up just fine for many years unless you'll be jumping beaver dams and fun stuff like that, so I wouldn't get too hung up on the brand. Happy hunting and welcome aboard.

15 on most any John flat or semi v would be a nice match for the load you mentioned. Johns plane easily, are light weight and durable. I have a welded alum boat and have seen numerous. Never saw a weld cracked.
