Ive experienced a miss in my idle speeds while fishing for some stipers this weekend. In hindsight I did smell a burning smell, but could not find the location. The next day I noticed a area of burnt paint on the side of the manifold on my 1974 jasper rebuilt(2001) 165 6cyl.It was located at a location next to the cabuerator. I pulled the upper half of the manifold off and the intake area was good. I was told by the prev. owner the alum manifold was from a 160 hp.Ive had it off a few years ago and it had a nice zinc chromate paint job on it. Anyone had experience with these manifolds?
Also Im having trouble finding this manifold or replacement parts. Does anyone have any advise on locations for parts? Will pull the complete unit in the next couple o days. Also ,if need be is it possible to change out the 160 w/ 165 cast iron manifold w/o to much plumbing mods?

Re: Alum 160 manifold problem (merc)

The area I think your talking about is the heat riser for the choke and does get hot also I have seen the tube that runs through the manifold rot out and in some case transfer exhaust through the carb causing poor idle. It is possible to change the tube in most cases. If you deside to
change the manifold it is the same as a 165 but there are several elbows, goto a Barr Marine site for a good listing
