Claton,

Awhile back you said that you had a chart that showed the correct jets sizes for different altitudes on these engines. My manual has no such chart. Could you, or anyone else, give me the correct low and high speed jet sizes for this engine. I run the boat between 4000 and 6000 feet.

Thanks,

That word in the title should be altitude. :)

According to the Carburetor Elevation Orfice Chart that I have for a '77 75 hp. Evinrude, the main orfice at sea level should be a 55D; from 3,000 to 6,000ft. it should be a 53D and from 6,000 to 10,000ft a 50D.

c/6

Hooty

Hooty,

I've got the correct high speed jet, but does the chart say anything about the low speed jet? I went to a local boat shop to get the jets and they said that if I decrease the size of the high speed jet by two sizes then I should increase the size of the low speed jet by two sizes. Does this make sense?

The chart that I have starts with 1980 models.

Hooty,

Did your chart say anything about the low speed orfice?

Hey Matt,
I'm looking in The Clymer manual and for that size and year engine, it makes no mention of changing low speed jets to compensate for altitude. They may not have to be changed because the fuel volume has already been reduced by reducing the size of the mains. If you've changed the mains, I'd run what I had and see if it works.

c/6

Hooty

The Cylmers manual does not list the low speed orifice. I would try it just with the main jet change, then if its too rich at idle work on the idle. I dont know what that carbrator looks like , so dont know where you should go up or down on the idle circuits without looking at the carb. I just put my parts books in storage, and cant look at break down of carb.

Re: Altutitude chart for 77' 75hp Evinrude

Hooty,

Thanks very much for the chart. The reason I'm asking all these questions is that I changed the jets when I moved to Utah. The motor trolls great and runs great on plane, but it has problems getting on plan while pulling a skier after about half an hour. Since I did have the large low speed jets I though that more fuel was being poured into the carbs at idle. Not enough to flood the engine, but enough to allow fuel to pool up at the bottom of the carb throat. I figured when I tried to take off all that extra fuel that had been slowly pooling in the throat was being sucked into the engine as well as the fuel from the high speed jet causing the engine to flood. Anyhow, I went back to standard low speed jet size and will try the engine as soon as the weather allows. It's a little cold now.

Clayton,

Here is a basic description of the carb. It has a fat tube (high speed) and a skinny tube inside the fat tube (low speed) that sit in the carb bowl. The fat tube feeds right up into the throat of the carb. The skinny tube runs up to the top of the carb where the low speed jet is located. Fuel from the skinny tube runs through the low speed jet and back to three small holes at the top of the carb just aft of the throat.

Thanks again for the advice. I can't wait until spring.

What jet would be recommended for a 65 HP Johnson? I believe it’s a 73 model. 700 feet above sea level so would probably fall in sea level category.
