The alternator on this boat has one wire coming off of it.
With a Chevy 4.3 motor on a truck you have 4 wires:
1) battery,
2) ground,
3) and the plug that has 2 wires that you plug into the alternator.

Is the boat the same as the truck? The wires in the boat are there but the ground and the plug that has 2 wires is not hooked up. Is this right? I dont undersand why its not hooked up.

My volt meter on the dash works ok, I just need someone who know more about this than I do.

Probably get more replies this way...

And yes, the same wires should be hooked up.

Re: Alternator

Thanks for the punctuation br0, helps a lot.

Your alternator was probably replaced with an aftermarket Delco single wire alternator, not the OEM type. Mercruiser used the Mando, Motorola, or the Prestolite around that time. They used 3 wires plus a ground (4 total). You will probably find a purple (excite) and a red/purple (sense) wire taped off somewhere in the area of the alternator. Orange should go to the starter (main output) and black to ground.
