I have a 1996 Merc 60 Hp. I reversed the cables one time, does this mean that i have automaticaly burned a rectifier on my charging system?,or is it fuse proteced. I did this last summer, and run my boat only a couple of times.
Would appreciate any suggestions
P.S.
My boat is in winter storage,it will be about 6 wks before i can check this out. Thanks. Bill

Re: Alternator

Put a voltmeter across the battery (or check the dash gauge if you have one). Above idle speed the voltmeter should read 13.5 volts or so. If it does, you are probably ok. If the voltmeter reads battery voltage (12.6 or less) check the fuse (if it has one). If its blown, replace it and recheck. If its still not charging, you very likely hatched the rectifier/regulator.
