Alternator?

I am wondering if it is possible to put an alternator on an engine between 9.9 and 25 horesepower, so that batteries can be charged while on the water. If it is possible, how much would it cost to buy the alternator, and then have it installed, and/or install it myself? If anyone has done this before, any tips are greatly appreciated.

Re: Alternator?

Depends on what make and model, but in many cases the answer would be yes. Let us know what make and model and we can be more specific. Assuming it's an 89 Merc, I'd say the answer is yes. If it's a 4-stroke, it might already be there.

Re: Alternator?

Thanks for the help. I am not sure what brand the motor is going to be, as I am still looking at availability in my area.

Re: Alternator?

An alternator will take 1 horsepower for every 25 amps it generates. There is no free lunch in generating electricity.

Re: Alternator?

I would gladly give up 1 hp for 25 amps.<br />My 40 only puts out 4.
