I have an older(73-75) 86hp Merc. About once a week, I have to put the charger on the battery to bring it back up.

Some friends said that some of the older motors do not have alternators.

How do I tell????

------------------
Mike M.

Re: Alternator????

Find stator, stator is the part under flywheel that dosent move. Should be 2 yellow wires, follow yellow wires to rectifier which has 1 red wire going to sw box. Meter on DC volts read lead to red wire on rectifier black lead to ground engine fast idle need 13,5 or more volts. Thes colors dont match engine send SN.

Re: Alternator????

Clanton:
Thanks! Found 2 yellows, rectifier, and sw? box.

Voltage on Red at rectifier is 12.2V (Battery voltage)with motor running or not.

The "sw" box must be the expensive one, cause the red connection and the terminal are really corroded. Don't know if I can clean it up or not without ruining the terminal. Should I see 13.6V at the rectifer, even with the corrosion on the sw box terminal?
