This alternator came off a 1974 Chrysler LM318. I believe it may be automotive. I have looked at several online and I am not having much luck.

Can anybody identify this, or tell me what type it is? Looks like to me an internal regulator. Thanks!

PS: I resize my photos to 800X600 and they still don't fit, huh?

Anything over 640 wide, and you get a scroll bar.

As far as the alternator, other than Motorola, couldn't say. Might take it to an alternator shop and they may be able to ID it for you.

Uhhhhh, no wonder you're having problems, that's not a starter :p :p

:D That makes twice in less than 5 minutes I said that. I was just showing it to a guy and called it a starter, he got a good laugh too! It's time for a cold beer.

I went thru some parts I've had for years and....lo and behold...I found a rebuilt one never installed, made by Prestolite, exactly the same. Can I bench test it?

Only if you have a way of running it. Either take it to a shop and have it test run (some auto parts stores check them for free) or stick it on the engine and run it. There are no Ohms test to see if it will work properly or not.

Thanks for your help, Don. :D

The boat is closer than any auto parts store. I know how to test her on the boat. I was just hoping to learn something new. I guess I did!

new alt.jpgHow can I be sure this is an ingition protected alternator I'm about ready to install? The hand written # leads to a marine part.... Gas scares me!

I'm still having a problem making sure this is a marine alternator or not. I've read something about a screen but what do I look for?

Re: Alternator? What Do I Have?

Not all alternators have visible screens, so you may not be able to tell by just looking at it.

Prestolite alternators dont use screens, the brushes and slip rings are in a sealed compartment on the back, you can see it in the picture, Mando uses a similar set up.

I'll second that! I knew little about I/O's and outboards before signing up here. I still know little, but learning more everyday. :D

Re: Alternator? What Do I Have?

I ran the boat for a couple days and still have the same problem with the new alternator. No charge till I rev her up to about 4000 RPM's. A manual I have says the excite wire either comes from the key switch or oil sender.

What voltage should I have at the excite terminal? Where can I find a good manual for this thing? I'm having no luck.

Re: Alternator? What Do I Have?

The excite wire should have ignition voltage, BEFORE any ballast resistors or resistor wires to the coil.

Re: Alternator? What Do I Have?

Thanks Don and Bubba,

I'll run over to the boat and check it out. If I still can't solve the problem with your advice I'll take some photos of what I have as far as wiring and components go.

Re: Alternator? What Do I Have?

I came across a manual for this old Chrysler motor. Here is a wiring diagram. It looks like the power to the field on the alternator comes from the key switch to the volt meter, thru a circuit breaker, then thru an oil pressure switch. Since the problem is self correcting my guess the oil pressure switch is the culprit. What do you think? I'm going to work on her today and want to be prepaired.

Also looks like my alternator is internal regulated. There is a panel on the engine has 2 breakers, a ballast resistor, and a solenoid. That's all I see.
