Hi,

2003 VP - 5.7 Gi-B

Recently my sea pump failed but before doing so squirted the front of the engine with seawater so consequently a few items have copped a bit of surface rust as a result.

The 'cooling fan' or fins on the front of the altenator have rust on them - if I brush it I'm worred about the filings going inside. Can I remove this fan or do I have to remove the whole alternator?

The pulley for the power steering and the back of the power steering pump but have rust on them. The back of the pump I could clean pretty easily without removing but I think the pulley itself needs removing to clean properly - can this be removed without having to remove the entire unit and having to bleed upon reattachment? (also, I'm worried about having to connect hydraulic lines again).

I usually use an air impact wrench to remove the nut on the alternator to remove the pulley and fan to clean and paint, the PS pulley however, takes a couple of special tools to remove and rinstall. Without them you will damage the pump and the pulley.

Thanks Don - I don't have an air impact wrench so if I remove the alternator I should be able to take it to a mechanic and get them to use their air wrench - from what I see in the manual, the alternator doesn't look too hard to disconnect.

With regards to the PS pulley, I also see in the manual mention of VP's special tools. If I pick these up, then can the pulley be removed without having to remove the PS pump?

If there is room in front of the pump.

PS: Any auto parts store sells PS pump pullers and installers. No need to buy the Volvo special tools.
Here is an example

I would bet you can also get them from ebay.

Here's one as an example.

Re: Alternator/Steering Pump - removing rust.

I know this is an old threat but it's taken me this long to get the sea pump sorted, new pulleys and refurbish the alternator. Now the last thing is the power steering pulley which I've left to last. I've purchased a power steering pulley remover and it arrives at the end of the week.

Looking at the photos I've taken, I can't tell (because of the rust) how the power steering pulley is attached to the power steering pump. Is it bolted on or a hex head or is it a threaded bolt which the power steering pulley key threads into?

I'm hoping there are instructions on the removal tool but being impatient, thought I'd try and find out as much as possible beforehand.

Are there any tricks/tips/don'ts that I should know before hand? E.g. should I use a creep oil or penetrant first?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!
