I'm replacing a Mercruiser 87' 260 5.7 engine on my boat with a new 5.7 base with Ignition, everything its going according to plan, but when removing parts the alternator broke on an inner wire actually it has two wires going in one red one purple the come out of the housing they were rusted and only a couple of strands were holding so I think I need a new alternator. Anyways doing some research i found most of the alternators are 55 to 60 amps for boat applications. I happen to have a new alternator from a 350 chevy 97' but this one deliver 105 amps, my question is can i use it and if so do i have to do any modifications? I know it fits mechanical wise but electrical wise , what am I getting in to?

Re: Alternator Question!

DO NOT use an automotive alternator, starter, distributor, etc. on a marine engine.
They are not spark protected and can and do cause explosions if gas fumes are present.

Re: Alternator Question!

All you need is a new plug, any rebuilding shop can repair it.Or have then do it as a 1 wire.
