Hello all
I have a 1990 larson 180 lazer wit a 3.7l mercruiser.
The boat had an alternator kit on it when I bought it(replaced the original stator that it came with).
The voltage gauge usually show about 11 volts at idle then drops a little at cruising speed. The alternator appears to be new except for the pulley. And a volt meter shows the same as the gauge when put on the alternator. The belt is fairly tight and wont tighten any more due to the lack of adjustbility on the alternator bracket(less than an inch of Travel before the engine or the Floor gets in the way). Its wired directly to battery 1. Could the pulley be to big(replaced to take up slack in the belt).
Any suggestions are appreciated

Maybe a 470 guy will come, but ALT's work mostly the same way. Its either a one wire which has all the control circuitry inside and no excite wires, or the excite wires are connected externally.

Take the ALT to a ALT/starter shop and let them test it and or rebuild.

Is it a one wire or more?

There are 2 wires.. one to positive post and one to the negative post on the battery.

That's called a 'one wire' alternator (the reference excludes the ground wire, as it's a given that alternators have a ground).

As already said, all the regulation circuitry is internal. 11v indicates it's not charging, regardless of the pulley size. Repair or replace.
