I'm looking for more info about converting the infamous charging system (stator & water-cooled voltage regulator) on my '88 Mecruiser 180 (3.7L). It has power steering. The motor is out of the boat now and I'm getting ready to drop it back in so it's an ideal time to do this. I'd like some feedback on this modification and any tips for sources for parts. I have the skills and tools to make my own brackets but would consider a kit. What alternator is best? I'd also like to hear from someone who's actually done this mod for any tips and lessons learned.

The GM 1wire is the best way to go.

I installed a breezeworks http://www.breezeworks.net/ low mount (with p/s) kit on my87 4winns this summer. It comes with a 3 wire marine alternator. Nice kit! $299.

Thanks, you guys, for the input. What is the difference between a one wire alternator and a three wire? Does one have an internal voltage regulator? Is one better than the other? Also what makes a marine alternator different from an automoblile alt? And lastly, I assume the low mount conversion bracket is for a motor with power steering or do I have a choice between a high or low mount with power steering?

They both have internal regs, the one-wire is self exciting. I personally prefer the 3 wire, but the 1 wire is popular, prob because ease of installing, electrical wise.

This is a pretty good discussion of 1 wire vs 3 wire: http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml They both have internal regulators. The marine alternator is shielded to prevent sparks from causing an explosion in the confined spaces around the engine. The length of the belt is the only difference difference between the p/s and no p/s versions of the low mount. The high mount is not compatible with p/s according to the info on the site.

If you have power steering but need a high mount due to floor/stringer obstructions, here is a video from a site where such a kit is sold:

He sells a good setup with a three wire alternator, and will help you with any questions. However it's about $400 - a C-note more than most others.

I bought one and am very satisfied with what I received, the way it installed, and the way it operates.
