Hey All,

I have been lurking for a couple months trying to learn, but I have come into a free 1966 Johnson 40 HP Super Sea Horse. I know I don't want to spend any money if I don't have to. It's also an Electramatic model.

This is what I learned I need to do first: check compression. Question, how do I do that on an electric motor? I know on a pull start, you just hook it up and pull it, no? I know there is an Emergency Start under the cowling, do I use that or something?

Because it's memorial day weekend, the library was closed, but I requested a book that will likely help me a bit with some general stuff. I just don't know what else to do. I know I need a compression tester - will an auto one do? Does one size fit all? If so, my brother is a huge gear head (and so it my gf's father) so they will likely have one.

Please help!

EDIT (Again, lol): Are the parts interchangeable between Super Sea Horse Electramatic - 154#Super Sea Horse electric - 145#Super Sea Horse manual - 132# (got that info off of another thread)? The reason I ask is because I found another motor the same year on craigslist and if the parts are similar (up to a point) it might be worth paying like 50 bucks or so for another motor, no? The guy also has the controls, jsut waiting on what his model number is. I will post mine later, but it's the Electramatic for sure.

Re: Need Help - 1966 40 HP Super Sea Horse

He just emailed me his model and serial: Model# RDSL-22; serial # 2046389
Mine: RK-RKL-28 Is his a 1960?

Are these parts interchangeable? And is compression easy to do (need more info than in the sticky, since I am a noob at this stuff) with my motor if mine requires electric start?

Re: Also new here and Need Help - 1966 40 HP Super Sea Horse

im not understanding what ur exactly asking.

compression is edit: !!!!(not)!!! hard to do and check. just hook up the compresion meter into the spark plug. make sure u take all spark plugs out so u can reach maxium rpm. then pull the recoil starter inside the motor. or hook up a battery and make the electric turn it. not if u dont have a batter hook up from the motor. now correct me if im wrong. u hook the positive to the electric motor. then a negavtive to a nice solid ground on the motor somewhere. then give about 3-4 sec for the motor to turn over. then wait 3-4 sec. try again. mainly again. ur looking for the highest possible rating from the meter. so keep turning it again if the meter readings keep going up. u may get a bit higher reading from the electric starter. but recoil should be fine.

for that motor u need at least min 70psi "if" it hasnt been started in a long time like 5 years plus maybe. but ur mainly looking for evenness in the cylinders. so 70-70 top and bottom piston for example. the limit is like 10% that

im sure that explained it good enough. any ?'s pm me. or just reply here again

oh by the way its extremely suggested to stay away from electric shift models. mainly cause they break down and the parts r really really expensive. and hard to find. unless u really like it then go ahead if u want.

choose the motor u wanna get running then first thing change the impeller in it

Coolguy, thanks a lot. Yeah, I figured it's not great to have the electric one - which is why I want to check compression. Is there a way to manually check compression on an electric engine? Like rather than use the battery hookups, use the emergency starter or something?

Is there a way to make the electric motor a tiller motor? Also, is his also electric (RDSL-22)? And are the parts interchangeable? I don't need these motors, just trying to make chicken salad out of chicken you know what.

Does anyone have a manual for this - I would be willing to pay you anything short of the full price rather than spend all that money for a manual. PM me please.

i cant give u any info on the interchangeable thing. but porbably some r if its the same horsepower. maybe the carb or somehting. not for sure though:confused:

umm what do u mean by electric? i mean have a electric starting is fine but electric shift or selectric shift or somehting like that is the bad thing. u can use the recoil to check compression. just use my instructions as stated above. again pull until the meter doesnt go up anymore.

again check compression before working on it. after when u know is good check spark and change impeller out for a new one
