So I pulled my drive off today(changing impeller), oil clean, but when I loosened the lower driver this came out/off once taken off. I'm guessing its an exhaust flap maybe? I can't find it anywhere in my manual or see. My questions are, 1) what is it 2) where does it go 3) if its what I think do I need to take upper drive off to replace. Thanks

Ayuh,... That's part of a shutter,...

The shutters live at the Top of the Y-pipe,...

Pull the exhaust elbow off, 'n look down the y-pipe,...

Thanks, what does it do? Keep water from back flushing into block? How much of a PIA to replace/change?

Yes... it prevents you from having to replace the engine... ask me how I know that :)

You need to fix it.

Just posted the following in another thread:

"Regarding the flappers... you should have a rubber exhaust hose that comes off your risers/manifolds and attaches a steel Y shaped exhaust tube that allows the exhaust to leave the boat through the drives. Where the exhaust hose connects to the Y, the flappers are ususally right there. You will likely have to take the riser off as just removing the exhaust hose will not give you enough access... but you can try. Use a large flat bladed screw driver to gently run the tip around the exhaust hose where it slips over the Y tube to break it free after you remove the clamps.

Your flappers should be "closed"... meaning they are gently resting against the side of exhaust tube. They work by letting exhaust and cooling water to push them open to escape but prevent backflow from the outside water coming back up the exhaust from outside the boat and flooding your engine."

It looks fairly easy to replace.....are these flappers only on the port side? Or on they on both sides? It looks like they are roughly around 50ish bucks each. Thanks for the help ladies and gents!

Make sure to find all the pieces. Don't want any loose parts down at the bottom of the Y-pipe clogging things up. If a pieces is left in, it has the possibility creating enough heat to burn through the Y-pipe

Thanks for all the help.... I now feel better knowing I can replace at a decent cost and fairly easy to do. Other question is how do I know what part # do I need? My motor/drive are (1995) 4.3 merc alphaone gen2
