We aquired a 1985 with a good alpha one upper, and a big hole in the lower. No water intrustion, just an someone who pulled it down the road too long....

I have a spare MC-1 lower from a 78' boat we scrapped. I can't remember if we leave the pin, or grind it off. Any other mods?

pin? You mean the pre-load pin?
You need it going this route.

Yes, the preload pin.

So I leave it in place and just mate the pre alpha (mc-1) lower into the alpha upper......

When would you grind it off?????

The shaft with w/pre-load stays with MC-1 gearcase. So actually, you would never grind it off.

I just looked at parts break down for MC-1. That shaft is almost a thousand bucks! New of course but holy-moly!

You wouldn't! That pin is to load the shaft downwards so the bearing runs properly. Remove the pin, and the bearing, the pinion and forward gear might last about 1 hour, maybe!

Just put the MC-1 lower onto the Alpha upper as you would any other drive....

That makes a new SEI a really good option!

So theoretically you could slap the MC lower on the Alpha One Gen. One upper without any modifications? This is very useful for parts acquisition.

Completely correct.... And you could put that drive on an MR gimbal housing... :D
