Okay, so I've been working on this 1997 Stingray since January when I bought it. I thought I finally had everything ready so we could take our maiden voyage this weekend, but yesterday after I shut off the engine I noticed some black oil coming from two small holes in the outdrive.

The outdrive has fresh gear oil (gree/blue in color) and the engine has fresh engine oil of the regular honey light/clear brown variety...

Can anyone tell me if the oil coming from both of the two small ports is normal? Anyone know why it would be dirty/black oil coming out of it? PIX POSTED BELOW.

Oh yeah, it should be a 1996 or 1997 Mercruiser Alpha 1 outdrive.
Thanks in advance,
Sean

Okay, so should work... hopefully. If not someone please let me know and I'll try to repost. If its doesn't say so in the pic, the dirty/black oil came from a small hold right below the large screw/nut on the right hand side.
There is a hold on both sides of the drive in this same location.

Thanks
Sean

Re: Alpha1 HELPPP

Did you split this drive to replace impeller or inspect? If so, did you replace the quad seal?

Here is the manual (go to page 251). Make sure to save this digital manual for future use.

Would have posted the engine manual also but not listed in your profile or in post. Add engine and drive in your profile and it makes it easier for others to help.

Re: Alpha1 HELPPP

That's just a drain hole for the area closest to the shift shaft.
If that was leaking oil. Then most likely the lower seals in the upper sections vertical shaft are more than likely leaking.

But... if you have "NEW" gearlube. It shouldn't be black. So i'm stuck as to why it's black. Are you sure it's actual oil, or just it just rainbow colored water?
