My friend and I have just finished rebuilding his outdrive lower unit.a alpha1 gen.2 mercruiser. We both have extensive mechanical knowledge. He is a plumber by trade so we had access to pipes of all kinds on site of the rebuild. His garage. We had a vice. All we had to do was weld one piece of pipe for the front ring. What special tools would we really need?We cut one other pipe to turn another ring.We already had a puller. We had to make longer connecting links to the jaws is all.No disrespect to anyone here.Thank you in advance.

You need the tools for setting and shimming gear heights and setting bearing preloads. Without being properly shimmed, the gears won't last long.

if you want to need for tools... besides all sorts of hand tools you need a small dial type tourque wrench for setting the bearing and a 1/2 drive clicker torque wrench for torqueing the but nuts. (hehehe)

For the lower you need
1. bearing carrier cover nut removal tool
2. shift shaft tool
3. spline socket
4. vertical shaft nut removal tool
5. shim gauge
6. extra long feeler gauge set
7. vertical shaft bearing preload tool also i believe....
8. factory service manual

for the upper you need
1. upper bearing carrier removal tool
2. shim gauge
3. big a@@ vise for holding the tool in #1 for when you set your bearings

if you don't have all the tools (and you need them all) your best off taking the drive in or seriously looking at the sei's if you need to do more than a re-seal on your old drive

Chielalen, I have the exact same boat as your friend. What other problems can i expect to run into with this boat? For the most part it runs pretty smoothly, but something is always bound to happen. Let me know of any reaccuring problems if you can. Thanks

The boat will probably run well as long as you don't allow soon to be son
in laws to hook it up to the truck. Or another disaster will occur.

Good luck
