Alpha water pump questions

I'm rebuilding my water pump and have the various kits (couldn't get complete pump). I have removed the old cup and the remains of the square section washer in the cavity just above the cup.
Question are :-
1) should the new cup be sealed or glued in at all.
2) how deep should the cup go into the housing - after cleaning up the housing the cup still seems to protrude a little from the housing mating surface - I have noticed that the gasket wil go over the slightly protruding cup.
3) Should the new square section seal be put in after the cup is inserted and fixed or before - is it supposed to be under compression in the cavity.
4) some instructions (and I've searched many !) mention a 'slinger' on top of the water pump - mine didn't have anything like that on taking it apart and there appears to be nothing in the kit - should I have one.
5) last question (for now anyway !) - when I pulled the upper and lower housings apart the O ring near the end of the vertical shaft came off. I have fished it out from behind the oil seal, but how do you keep this O ring on when re-assembling the two halves - surely the oil seal will just push it down the shaft ?

Sorry so many questions - I really have searched for answers without luck. Any expert help very gratefully received. Thanks, Chris.

Re: Alpha water pump questions

ya should get one of these.
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...bnbr=70&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING+ASSEMBLY,+COMPLETE the very last item on the numbered list that don't have an item number. part # 46-96148A8 it'll have everything ya need to do the water pump deed, short of the water pump base.

i've never R&Red the cup before. if ya get the above kit, you don't either.

1. from memory and reading the oem manual. yes, locktite comes to mind, but i didn't go look at the s/m to confirm this statement..
2. the cup on a used oem part i have around has the lip of the cup protruding about a figner nail thickness. 1/64"????
3. there is no seal in the ones i've gotten that have been pre assembled at the factory. it also talks about the seal at the top of the water pump cover in the s/m and if memory serves me, it states that some units don't have a seal there. my '75 mc-1 don't.
4. yes. it comes with the oem kit
5. eliminate the oring. it's not necessary. proof would be that the later 1-mr and up don't have an oring groove in the drive shaft, therefore, no where to even put a oring on that drive shaft. i have the groove on my mc-1 drive and i left the oring off. never installed it..

if ya have the oring groove in the lower drive shaft, ya probably don't have a alpha1. likely a mc-1 or 1r. unless the lower only has been replaced.. alpha1's don't have the oring groove..
imho....

Re: Alpha water pump questions

Hi - thanks for the reply. Tried to get complete pump but was told by dealer here in France that I needed impeller kit + base kit + cup and that was a complete pump except the body. I even paid 60 Euros (yes, SIXTY) for a tin of Perfect Seal as I want to do the job properly - Mercruiser profiterring at it's worst.
So back to what I've got - are you saying that the cavity in the main body above the cup is empty ?
Also, looked at the picture of the complete pump and I still can't understand which is the slinger. Will you tell me what it looks like and what it's made of please. Thanks.

Re: Alpha water pump questions

these are parts from a '75 mercruiser mc-1 drive.

are you saying that the cavity in the main body above the cup is empty ?
yes, for my '75 1 drive that's true..

this is the slinger. it's kinda softer rubber

it just slides down the drive shaft and sits here...

a pic of how much of the cup is sticking out of the housing..

best i know, these are oem parts. the housing was pre assembled when i got the replacement, they were identical. these are all the old parts.

bummer about the prices over there....
