Alpha Swivel Shaft Seal - Which way???????

I'm trying to figure out which way the swivel shaft seal gets installed on my Alpha Gen I, and I've seen descriptions stating "lip up", and the diagrams seem to show them with the lip facing up;
HOWEVER, that is the opposite way you would think to install a seal, being that it's trying to stop the water from entering the boat from below the seal.

Is it because it's only sealing very very low pressure, and could get kinked/ruined when the swivel shaft is inserted upward through the seals???

Also, since I have no grease fitting, it appears that I'm supposed to use one seal on top of the bushing, and one seal below; do they both get installed "lip up"?
Has anyone ever done this swivel shaft seal replacement?
I need to get this straight, so I don't have to do this a 3rd time :confused:

The illustration in the gen II service manual clearly shows the upper seal installed with the lip up. That is the garter spring of the seal should be facing up. Should be the same as gen I, since the swivel pin part numbers are the same.
"Oil Seal Installation
1. Install upper swivel shaft oil seal as follows:
a. Place oil seal on bearing and seal driver with lip facing the small diameter end of tool (up).
Apply Loctite 271 to O.D. of seal."

They show just one seal, on bottom. Good luck.

I`ve done the same job with 2 GEN II transoms and I added the grease fitting that mrec left out. Simple process and keeps the seal greased and the rust down
