for alpha outdrives, the adjustment on the cable going from the shift plate to the drive is 6" between the center of brass barrel and center of mounting hole in end of cable, when in forward gear.
Is there any measurement for what it's supposed to be when in reverse?
How about the movement distance on the upper shift cable end coming from the throttle lever at the helm?

I have a lower new shift cable installed, and adjusted it last night but in the dark. Will get forward gear nice but prop won't catch in reverse. This is on land, by hand, engine not running. The throttle/shifter is a mercontrol from 1976, just replaced the throttle cable. About 1' section of the shell had rotted away. What are the odds I need new upper shifter cable and/or new control?

Re: alpha shift cable adjustment specs?

There is no rev. measurement once fwd is adjusted to 6", if you need more travel move the outer shift cable up the slot, on most early models you wind up with the 2 cables as close to gather as possible, then center the shift box travel with the cable adjustment from the box if the engine stalls when shifting into both fwd and rev you need to move the cable down the slot so you have less travel

found it, thanks for the link.

Checking Remote Control Shift Cable
Output:
IMPORTANT: Remote control must provide a
shift cable travel (at the shift plate end) of 2-7/8 in.
(73 mm) to 3-1/8 in. (80 mm) with a 15 - 20 lb. (6.8
- 9 kg) load applied to the cable end guide.
