As many of you already know I have an Alpha outdrive and seemingly enough that I have already drained the fluids from it. I was wondering if it was just a regular gear lube or some special lube that goes in there.....and is is possible to use a synthetic lube in it's place?

Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. There are a few good reasons to use it, mostly its water resistant properties. You can use a synthetic oil, but very few of them are developed specifically for a water based application, so have very poor water resistant properties.

I will have to check it out then instead of using synthetics , thanks for the info Chris, not willing to make changes if it might cause a problem .Which types were used in mercruisers?

Mercury HP gear lube IS a synthetic oil.

Do a search for gear oil here. You'll find a plethora of threads where people are expounding on their own "Pet" brand of oil.

Re: Alpha Out Drive Lube

After I read that article it seems that Marine has additives that are synthetic and added to the lube thus making it what it is, still Mercury Lube not a true synthetic, it's a synthetic blend, kinda like Mercruiser's 3.7 l it's a blend alright, but it worked.....hahaha, however on the flip side these lubes are still petroleum based. I have to read a bit more on this wow thanks guys, I'll stick with what Mercruiser recommends for it. It's Monday morning, and my day is just beginning, so I had to add a bit of humor :D
