alpha one water exit location(s)?

Been test running a project boat with alpha gen 1 outdrive in a bucket, have been noticing water coming out regularly then intermittently then none at all, then regularly so forth and so on no real patter time it reason. Could someone please explain to me what exactly normal operation looks like, where I should be seeing water exit, feeling exhaust exit, and how much as well as frequency of water exit? Also should the prop be spinning at any time when not in gear (free spin maybe due to outside forces or magic lol) not real sure of what normal operation should be. Thanks in advance

you bucket`s not big enough or deep enough. most likely have impeller damage by now. the water level MUST be atleast 3-4 inches ABOVE the cavitation plate or else the impeller is damaged.

Ayuh,..... That's yer problem,..... Ya need to force feed an Alpha with Muffs on a garden hose, full blast,....

There oughta be lotsa water splashin' all over, comin' out the prop, 'n the idle relief ports, 'n slippin' by the muffs,....

Ya probably gonna need to change the impeller now too,....

Get a set of muffs and an impeller. The water should come out the idle relief ports (at the transom) mostly and a little out the prop.

When I say bucket I mean one of the plastic 50gal oil drum cut in half. What are you referring to the cavitation plate? Will check the impeller. And report back. Water should be pouring at all times not just a mist correct? And it should be pumping water immediately after start up correct, should I ever haveto rev the engine a little to get it to start? If repair is needed the manual calls for quicksilver 2-4-c, is there a good substitute for this?

Also remember to "feel" the water coming out of various places on your outdrive for temperature. Some effluent will be tap cold, but your true coolant stream will feel warm. As stated in other posts, most of your warm water will emerge from the idle relief ports, not the prop. Muffs are a must w/ good water pressure.

Shouldn't have to rev the engine. Don't understand your reference to 2-4-c.

As others have said, get muffs.

10-4 on the muffs and the picture. When the service manual talks about replacing the water pump and impeller it mentions lubricating various parts with quicksilver 2-4-C lubricant. Is there an alternative lube/grease I can use?

24C is readily available at any marine outlet for less than $10 for a big 8 oz tube. It will last you for years.
It is a waterproof, teflon based grease, that you will end up using on everything in the garage. Really Nice Stuff!!
It is easy to acquire, low cost, and a nice off white color with easy cleanup!
There is no reason to use any substitute.

The #1 problem with the bucket is that the engine will overheat the water in a very short time.
When on the muffs, the water passes through the block just once.
Even in a single pass, the water comes out noticeable warmer than when it went in.
To use a bucket, you will need to keep a hose flowing at full capacity so the bucket is continuously overflowing the warm water.
And the impeller will need to be below water level to keep the impeller primed.
If you rev it up enough to get exhaust out the prop, the exhaust bubbles will be injected into the cooling water flow to the Block.
Nothing good will come of it.

Depending on your drive reduction ratio, you should expect to move about 4 gallons per minute at 1000RPM.
About the same amount of water a typical residential garden hose can deliver.

Get to the store and buy some Muffs, 24C, and an Impeller. ~$50-75.

10-4 and thanks. This allt really broke it down for me. cooling systems on boats are still like a foreign language to me lol
