First of all thank you everybody for your answers with my previous questions. This website is a great resource for boaters of all kinds! Now on to my question. I have a 1987 Sea Ray Seville which has the 3.0L (181cid) Mercruiser with an Alpha One outdrive. My problem is that sometimes when shifting out of neutral I get a clunking noise as the drive tries to engage, this is only fixed by giving it a little gas and it will clunk into gear. The odd thing is that sometimes when the boat is idling a little higher the drive will go into gear the first time without any clunding at all. I would love be able to get this fixed because I feel like I'm tearing up gears using it like this. Anybody know what could be causing this or a solution to my problem?

You ARE tearing up gears. It may be that the shift cables need just need adjusting, or the lower cable is worn out inside and has excess movement that can't be adjusted fully both forward or reverse.
Click on the link below, scroll down to the manual outline and click on seciton 1C- troubleshooting, and section 2A for adjustments.
