I took off alpha one LU for a impeller change and now it will only go in forward if it's facing the 1 o'clock position. No matter what I do it will not line up straight. It's on an 86 Mercruiser 5.7. Is it possible that the intermediate shift shaft is bent? It looks nice and straight.

You did not turn the splined lower shaft fully clockwise while turning the prop CCW until locked, this is Fwd gear.
When raising the unit the upper brass shaft MUST SLIDE ON EASILY and be facing in a straight line

I doubt it, need to split the drive down a bit so you can get at the shift shaft without the shift foot attached. Rotate the shift shaft so the prop locks when rotating the prop counter clockwise. Put a bungee on the prop so the shift shaft does not move. Now make sure the shift foot is facing forward and put the two pieces back together. Level bungee on until the drive is back on the boat

Yeah, I can get the lower in forward and lock but there is no position where the intermediate shaft faces straight forward and is in forward. It's always at 11 or 1, never 12.

I can adjust it so it will shift in gear but the interrupter will not engage. It's weird.

It has to be at 12 in forward

The interrupter is only used when going into neutral from either FWD or REV

Oh, well then I might be good then. Does adjusting the lower shift cable affect the interrupter?

No, but it has to be at the 12:00 position to get the correct travel.

I know the switch works, if I push it the motor quits, so I think it might be fine. Thanks for the replies, it was very helpful.
