Ahoy, I'm putting a 85 searay 250 cuddy fisherman together, I have been working on the shift adjustment, I adjusted the lower cable to 6 inches from center of pin to barrel, free Play in cable I have about 1/2 a inch, spec is 9/16, I'm getting about 3 1/8 inch of travel on cable from selector, in order to have full engagement in reverse I have to have the pin all the way up in the slotted hole, is this usually from wear in the dog clutch and gears on the drive ?? Reason asking is I would like to have pin on the bottom or atleast in the middle of the slot, just not sure what usually Is the culprit when you have to have pin in the highest of the slot, thanks fellas

is this a new lower cable or a worn out cable?

The freeplay is over the spec means cable is stretched , hence being in top of slot. if you can get it adjusted so it works leave it alone. Otherwise replace able
