Alpha One reverse

1986 Alpha One outdrive<br />140 Mercruiser engine<br /><br />Just started having trouble shifting into reverse. Actually goes forward sometimes when it should reverse.<br /><br />Does anyone know what the problem could be? This is only an intermittent problem...sometimes it goes into reverse just fine.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Brian

if your drive is not makeing any weird sounds, I would guess that you shift cables are in need of lube or adjustment. as this is a off and on type problem, most likely the cables need some oil. Have you noticed the shifter getting stiff or sluggish?

no, actually just the opposite...it feels a little loose...i'll check the cable...where would it need to be adjusted?

probably need to pick up a clymer repair manual,it shows how to do it. not that difficult but does take up a few pages to explain...
