Just replaced water pump in alpha one. Forward gear works fine under power Placed in reverse and new noise was heard and engine revved up. I shut down. Now when prop is turned by hand clicking is heard. Is the a problem with the replacement / realignment of the unit when the water pump was replaced.

Sounds like the shift shaft may not gone back on the lower shaft splines correctly, or it requires adjustment on the shift cable attachment at the elbow, where the two cables meet at the connection point above the engine.

I'm sure the guys on here will be able to help, they sure know their stuff.

English is right. Just do a search here and it will tell you how to line up the spline when you replace the foot. The clicking is normal.

I would start by disconnecting the lower shift cable at the engine and see if you can run it thru the gears by hand. By hand i mean hold the cable by the brass barrell and push on the end of the cable. That should put the drive in FWD [prop locks if spun CCW -by hand-and ratchets if spun CCW] Then pull on the cable, a little, it should go into nuetral, prop spins freely both ways. Pull on it a little more and the LU should go into REV. Prop should lock if spun CW and ratchet if spun CCW. If all that works, It is probably just a lower shift cable adjustment.Or the splines are off as others have stated. Search on how to do this or get out your manual and read up. If you cant get FWD-n-REV manually, you may need to replace your lower shift cable.. But start w that maybe and report back .

Yes, it's MOST likely an alignment issue as you suspect. I'm guessing the lower (splined) shift shaft wasn't fully engaged in forward or the upper wasn't pointing directly fore and aft when you mated the two halves back together. Either way, if it's off just one spline you're gonna have problems. Split the two halves back apart and then follow the Service Manual instructions line-by-line on joining the two halves and you'll probably take care of the issue...

Thanks for all of the updates. I failed to mention that I paid for the replacement of the water pump. So, after reading the replies I call the shop back with "a lot of additional information" (thank you very much) and I was able to get the shop to agree that in all liklehood a misalinement took place when the LU was reinstalled. So, now its back to the shop we go!
PS, the exhaust bellow was also replaced and I am going to review the cable connections on the motor / etc before I haul the boat out but given all of your advice I now know what I am looking for.
