I just did all the maintenance on my outdrive and when I put it back on I cant get the outdrive to shift out of forward to neutral.

The cable pulls through the bell housing when the outdrive is off.

What am I missing? Everything worked fine last year.

Thanks

clarify. the core pulls out? When assembled, the splined lower shaft was turned fully clockwise(fwd) and then the top half was lower on keeping the brass shoe in a straight line?

I turned the lower brass piece CCW while turning the prop clockwise until the brass piece locked straight the prop locked also.

The shift cable moves fine when the outdrive is off. the lever in the bell housing moves fine.

So this brass piece (on the lower drive) does not want to move CCW like it should when shifting back to neutral or reverse, which the shoe on the bell housing does.

are the shift dogs not releasing?

I hope I am explaining this right.

OK, the reason you can not shift into reverse is that you are ALREADY IN REVERSE, and when you pull back on the control, it tries to rotate the shift shaft counterclockwise and it is already as far CCW as it can go. To fix your problem: Shift the control to WOT forward. Drop the gear housing (lower), turn the short splined shaft (lower shift shaft) all the way CLOCKWISE and turn the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE till it locks. You are now in forward. Use a bungee to hold CCW pressure to keep it locked in forward and put er back together making sure the top of the intermediate shift shaft points straight ahead. Yeah I know it seems like you would turn the prop CW to lock in forward but think about it, the gears turn the shaft cw, but the resistance of the water is CCW so you have to turn the prop CCW to simulate the water pressure on the prop in forward.

Very common error. Make sure to keep the lower in forward the entire time it is being installed. Pressure needs to be applied to the prop to hold it. If it gets bumped out of gear you have to stop and start over.
