Hello fellow boaters :)
I need help with on what to look for, any help is appreciated.

A little history first, I have a '89 Cruisers with a 5.7 engine which was replaced just last year, at that time I had the coupler changed (for peace of mind) and the shift cables replaced as well.
This motor is coupled to an Alpha one mercuiser.
Total hours since replaced, less than 20.

Now, yesterday, I was out pulling a tube with a few kids in it, all was going good but when I went to shift it in neutral it was still engaged in forward, I tried to shift it in reverse but I was still moving forward.
I stopped the engine and thinking the shift mechanism might not be doing what I was asking it to do I opened up the motor access to take a look at it and all seems like it's working properly.
So I started it up again but now I have no forward or reverse.

I got pulled to a dock where I jumped in the lake to take a look at the back of it.
In whatever gear I put it in the propeller grabs on one side but is free on the other, yes even neutral.
Did a bit of research here last night and today and from what I could make of it it might be the
1: "coupler" but then I had no smoke/odor prior to it not going and it's new (well was new 20 hours ago)
2: "cable" but then all seems to be working like it should.
3:"Propeller" maybe I spun the hub (hope so) but would it not have disengaged in neutral? and would it just be free in either forward or reverse?
4:"gears" ?
5:"drive shaft"?
6:
7:.....???

One thing I did forget to mention is I did get a big bang in the back when the towed tube robe got in the propeller when I was just putting along but apart from breaking the rope everything else seems good and we did another hour or so after that and it was fine.

So I'm asking what should I be looking at here, I'm no expert when it comes to boats but if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right I would be most gracious.

**Update**
Just came back from getting her.
Funny thing, I had forward now so I eased it in closer to where the trailer was but did a few short power tests.
It was pulling ok but I did notice some klunk a few times.
I then tried to put it back in neutral and reverse but still stayed in forward.

On the trailer I turned the prop a few times and it disengaged completely, so now no forward, no reverse just neutral.
I did hear a few weird noises in the bottom end of it, guess that rope I caught managed to break some gears in there.
Will take it apart and see what's up.
