I was told locally 2qts, but my book says 32 oz. Which is correct.

Another dump question, how does the oil get from the lower unit to the upper unit? I am confuzed.

When I did the impeller I did not see a port.

They take around 36 oz, if you don't spill a drop.
There is an oil passage between the upper and lower. There should be a small quad ring going around the oil port. If you missed that ring, pull it back apart. You will loose gear lube and gain water in the drive.

Yep! Thats for sure.

Last year I was in a rush to get on the water, so I paid a place to do the impeller on my old sea ray that they half assed it, and did not clean out the tube, which in turn ruined the new impeller. So this time I wanted to do it myself on my bayliner and know it was good to go. I just hate how mercy manuals are scattered all over.

Funny parts is My impeller was new, so it was all a waste anyways.

YOu have to understand the manuals are not DIYer manuals. They are for Merc techs that are also trainded in how to use the manuals.
The dissasemble a section like the lower unit, which includes the raw water pump. then there is the reassembly of the lower unit, of which the pump is part of the job.
It's not seperatied out into how to change the impeller only.
All the nice DIYer manual do try to do that, however, they usually leave out most of the important steps because it makes the manual too thick.
How else do you think they can take all the manuals from merc which would be a stack about 1 to 2 feet high and put it all in one manual about an inch thick?

All is well now. Thanks. The oring was fine but I put a new one in anyways. Someone rubber cemented it in which is why it did not get lost.

4 times, what a learning experiance......:D

Of course you pumped the oil in from the bottom untill it came out the top hole, correct?

Yep, had I remembered that this morning I would not have asked this question. I knew to pump in from the bottom for air purposes, I just forgot they wanted it to start coming out the top. I am going to run the drive on muffs for a bit and then recheck after letting it sit. Reason for all the paranoia is becuase this boat will stay in a slip all summer so I want it perfect.

One quart fills it pretty much exactly. But I usually need two quarts (all of one and part of another) due to my spilling several ounces.

If you have the remote resevoir and replace all of it too, I think you will end up closer to the 2 quarts. That is maybe why some people told you 2 quarts.
