Alpha one gen one lower shift shaft not reaching upper

Thanks for any help on this.

This is on my 88 cabin cruiser. twin Mercruiser 4.3 and alpha one gen one stern drives. Last weekend i lost fwd and reverse on starboard drive. I went through all the cable checks and all is good. Now the boat is on a trailer and I have the drive off. Drive checks out fine...shifts fwd and rev. Lower cable, engine coupler and prop hub all good. I put drive back on and noticed that the lower shaft is not reaching the upper shaft. just barley missing it.
I'm wondering what could be the cause of this. the upper looks fine just the lower has play in it.

your missing the SS washer that goes on the splined lower shift shaft

How did you lose it without splitting the drive?

he must be operating in the Bermuda Triangle... things just go missing there
