I have a '98 merc 3.0 I/O with an Alpha one Gen 2 outdrive.
I recently replaced my starter and put the boat back in the water. I powered out slowly and about 300 yards from the boat ramp, I began to increase the power and it started making a weird noise.
I took it home and ran it and isolated the noise to the outdrive, but only when in gear
I changed my impeller and changed the gear lube. it was pretty dirty, but no water. I ran it again and the same thing. the noise appears to be in the upper unit. the cover to the top seemed to get pretty hot.
I pulled the entire outdrive off and the ujoints seem good. I pulled the cover off of the top of the upper unit. it looks good from what I can see.
Any thoughts on what this could be caused by? I think I have reached the end of my "do it yourself" ability.
