Hello.

I'm hoping to get some clarity in replacement seals and procedure. I see that mercruiser has updated the original two seal setup with a single double seal. I plan on getting the 26-88397A-1
upper seal kit. The older two seal setup required a specific tool: 91-817570T. That tool seems like it's being phased out. Perhaps because the double seal doesn't require it?

I'm confused as to what special tool, if any, I need to seat that newer designed double seal into the upper housing at the proper depth. I just finished a full bellows service replacing the 26 year old intact originals. The last thing I want to do is pull the drive, once again, to fix an improperly placed seal. Thanks!

That is good news! Thanks!
You will need the wrench to take off the input yoke, use some heat patience and good penetrating oil like Kroil.
the seal needs to come out from he outside in So you have to tear down the upper. Keep track of where any shims go and if you don’t replace bearings existing shims should be ok.
get mercruiser manual 14 for the gen 2 will walk you through it

I noticed the seal is smaller in diameter than the smallest driver adapter in the HF set (39.5mm). I don't think it will fit. Did HF change their product?

I think we're talking about two different seals. This is the seal I'm referring to. It was a two separate seal set up, then switched to a single double lip seal.

We are talking about the same seal. I used a socket same diameter as the seal on an extension to drive it in

About the drive in the double seal. My kit came with this larger shaft seal that doesn't seem to go anywhere on my 1998 upper gear case. I'm taking a wild guess this is for a different vintage gen2 drive. It's the green 2.75" diameter seal in the picture.

Old single lipped seals next to new double seal. Old seals are worn about 0.045" in the inner diameter vs the new seal. Rubber is less pliable.
