Anyone ever have a cable not want to loosen from the bell housing? I used the special mercruiser tool, but the outer cable wanted to keep spinning with the nut on the other side of the bell housing. Eventually had to cut it and buy a $50 cable. Hoping all the parts I will need will come with it...

There is no nut on the forward side of the bell-housing. The cable threads into and seals on the bell-housing... Merc special tool? Just a 9/16" deep socket with an external hex is all you need.

And yes, all the parts for the cable come with it... You bought OEM, right?

Bought a mercuiser thin wall deep socket for $25 (am I a sucker?) Fits over the aft side of the cable as it exits the bell housing. As I tried to loosen, the black cable housing would spin. I tried some gentle vise grip pressure, then some less than gentle pressure to no avail. Eventually the cut off wheel after a lame attempt with dykes (that is some thick braid under there!). Was there a trick I missed?

Urrr, yes... The black outer is meant to spin, it's attached to the aft part of the cable you're on the other end of trying to turn.

Are you sure there was a nut back there? If there was, you have a Bravo drive, not an Alpha.

Glad to be a lesson for others. I thought the brass looking nut was a jamnut on the aft side, and the black cable housing would detach from the fwd side of the bell housing. $ 50 mistake, just bought a new shift cable.
