Alpha one Gen 2 Reverse making a grinding noise

Had a gear lube leak on a 96 Alpha one Gen 2 outdrive, took off the lower on the outdrive and it turned out being a bad seal on the drive selector, replaced it and put everything back together, ran the boat, it shifted into drive real smooth, shifted into reverse and it makes a grinding noise. Turned off boat put it into reverse and I can turn the prop forward and reverse. What is going on

Your shift cable is out of adjustment. The cable stretches over time. Depending on how old it is you might need to replace it, but try the adjustment procedure first.
