alpha one gen 2 mercruiser where is water pick up on drive?

i want to check and see if there is some debri or somethign clogging the water pickup from the drive. where exactly is it? i looked in the manual but couldnt find it...can i do this in the water?

Your water pick up is towards the lower end of the lower unit. You will see a fan like opening on both sides. There is a screw or two holding it on . This is were you put your muffs on when running the boat with the gaden hose
