So, found what i thought was an identical outdrive for my 3.0 motor, alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive that recently failed on me. Came off same motor and one year older boat. Put the outdrive on tonight and noticed i could not shift into reverse. Finally figured out that the shift lever on the outdrive turns the opposite way when compared to my outdrive. Did i buy the wrong outdrive? Anything i can do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks so much
Dave

2 options ,you have a reverse rotation lower unit or the lower shift shoe in not installed correctly on the splined shaft

Wonderful. Thanks for the reply. So if it is a reverse rotation am I out of luck? How can I identify if it is counter rotation?

Well the guy said it was off a single engine boat, it has the 3.0 stamped on the outdrive... Of course i never saw it so who knows.

I read somewhere that a counter rotation shaft will not have any play in an out. This ones does have some in/out play about as much as my old outdrive.

the shift rod/shoe turns in the same direction on all drives. 1200 in a straight line F
1100 in N
1000 in R
If you turn the shift shaft fully clockwise and the prop shaft locks CCW you have a standard drive and the shoe is not on the lower splined shaft correctly. A CR will have the shift shaft turned fully CCW and the prop will lock CW
To remove a CR drive you have to put it in Rev to have the shift shoe in a straight line

Ok well then it appears it is not on the splined shaft correctly. He did say he replaced impeller so maybe got messed up then? Hope I can figure out how to get it on correctly

there are lots of videos on setting it . generally you would drain the oil, remove the nuts to drop the lower unit, turn the splined shaft fully CW untill the prop locked CCW and set the brass shoe on the splined shaft in a straight line

Ok, thanks so much for the troubleshooting help. Fishing trip in less than 2 weeks and getting a little nervous it won't be ready. Much appreciated!

Just wanted to say thanks again for the help. Had a chance this evening to split it apart just enough to get to the splined shaft. Turned it fully clockwise and prop shaft CCW and held it as i slid upper and lower back together with brass shoe in the forward position. Seems to be all good now.
