Alpha One exhaust bellows upgrade to exhaust tube?

I have a 1987 Alpha One (gen I) mercruiser stern-drive on a 130 hp engine. There is a small water leak coming into the boat in the stern-drive bell housing area somewhere, so it's time to pull it apart and while I am in there, replace the three bellows, two hoses and maybe the shift cable too. The exhaust bellows looks cracked enough that it may be the source of the leak anyway.

Question - I have exhaust bellows on my boat, but looking through this forum and at parts listings, there appears to be an easier alternative, an exhaust tube. How do I know if I can upgrade to this exhaust tube?

See transom service kit #21951 w/tube vs. #21950 w/bellows.

http://www.sterndrive.info/alpha-one/bell_housing.html

Thanks!

That's a Wise Choice,...... Do the Trim Switches,+ Wires if you're inclined to use that stuff,..........

The Exhaust Bellows could be Gone,+ water will Not Leak into the Boat,.... That's Not your Leak......
The Tube is an Easy Swap,...... I'll Never install another Exhaust Bellows,... Ever Again.......

Re: Alpha One exhaust bellows upgrade to exhaust tube?

Thanks Bondo - Yes, I do like to be able to use the power trim now and then... :D and had not thought about replacing the trim switches/wires, and I now see that the service manual shows that those wires do get chaffed easily.

So, since I do not know the maintenance history on this 1987 sterndrive and I am preparing to use it off-shore (I added an auxiliary 9.9hp 4-stroke just in case), then I will want to be replacing: the three bellows, two hoses, the shift cable, and the trim limit switches and wires.

I will check the gimbal bearing. Anything else you would suggest while I have the outdrive off?

Also, I am without a hoist and the special tools required - about how many man-hours would you expect a marine shop to do the above R&R - about 4 hours?
