Alpha install question

Well it is not really an Alpha it is an SEI106 being used to replace a pre-Alpha . . . Anyway, is there any reason I cannot install the upper driveshaft housing before the lower unit? All instructions I can find (factory manual and others) reference assembling the halves first. It would sure seem easier on my back (no proper stand) etc. if I installed the upper to the bell housing first and then slid up the lower unit. Comments?

Re: Alpha install question

Whatddya a wimp?.....
Man up!.......:p
Sure you can, but it is a b!tch to bolt the lower to the upper because of the two side nuts......
I usually put it together on a bench.....
But, the easiest way I have found is to just catch the threads on the front bolt & then put the sides on.....
Not only do you have to keep it in gear & line up the drive shaft & shift shaft, you fight gravity as well......;)
Easier on the bench, & installing whole......
If ya get it to where the skeg is just touching the ground, it ain't bad....:)

You CAN do it that way, but it's going to be a problem turning the shaft to get the splines lined up.
Usually, if you set the drive on blocks or on the ground and adjust the height of the transom with the tongue jack to get the right height, you can install the complete drive with minimal lifting.

OK, I have adjusted my jock strap, and will go with the assembled install. Thanks.
