I have an Alpha I Gen I outdrive with the 4" square cap with lifting eye on top. The serial number if I copied it correctly is 6734548. It is part of a Merc 470 on a Grady White. Is there a link to a service manual? How can I determine what ratio it is?

It's a 120 drive, with a 1.98 gear ratio. The 470 should have a 1.84. Not a huge difference, but also not the original drive for that engine.

Don,
Thanks for the reply. That's interesting. This is a new boat to me and while I know a little about its past I did not suspect another outdrive. Engine serial number is 6122473. The boat is registered as a 1983.

Thanks,

Dennis

Here is what it was when new.

Engine: 06122473 04706002 470
Drive: 06095768 01845012 MC-1 1.84:1
Transom shield: 06134548 00018002 MC-1

The boat was purchased in June of 82, not sure why it would show 83. What's the HIN say it is?

You're correct. Boat registered as a '82 but trailer is '83. HIN=NTLDD509M821.

Ayuh,... The MC-1, 'n all rest of the variants up to the Alpha 1, All interchange, Casing wise,...
The gear ratio is what's different, in yer case, 'n not so good...

The MC-1 has the liftin' ring, 'n the cases changed, I think with the R drive to the Alpha 1 lookin' housings...
The R drive, MR drive, 'n the Alpha 1, Look exactly the same, with minor up-dates that went on inside the cases...
You can mix, 'n match complete units, or uppers, 'n lowers, 'tween all of 'em,...
Internally, there are some variations...
